Keep luxury flowing through the Italian bathroom, too! In earlier times, when poverty was more the norm in Italy than it is today, the bathroom served only a functional purpose. Not much time, energy or money went towards making this part of the home look good. Today, however, this mindset (as well as overall prosperity) has changed. Italians, like most of us, take great pride in their appearance and the bathroom is the place they go to work on perfecting their images.

No detail in the Italian bathroom is overlooked, not even the hardware on the cabinets. To convey a classical Italian look in the bathroom, again use rich woods for the cabinetry, and Italian ceramic tiles on the floor in an earthy tone. But on the bathroom washbasins (double washbasins are the norm) and countertops nothing beats the look of Italian marble. Hand polished pewter, steel and other metals are common elements of Italian bathroom fixtures. Showers and bathtubs are used as much for cleanliness as they are for feeling good. That’s why today’s Italian bathroom boasts as its centerpiece an oversized Jacuzzi tub completely surrounded by marble and an array of fragrant candles flickering in low level lighting.
